Not once, not twice, but three times! For the third time in Sherlock’s history, the Slurm job ID counter was reset over the weekend, and went from job #67,043,327 all the way back to job #1!

When the Slurm scheduler’s maximum assignable job ID is reached, the next job submitted is assigned job ID #1, starting the count anew. Since Sherlock’s launch in 2014, this reset has now happened three times: first on May 11, 2020, then on November 5, 2022, and now, just over two and a half years later.

Altogether, Sherlock users have submitted more than 200 million jobs—a testament to the platform’s pivotal role in supporting Stanford’s research community, especially in recent months.

We’d like to take this milestone to thank all Sherlock users for your ongoing support, motivation, and patience, especially when things don’t go as planned. We’re honored to help enable your research, and we look forward to continuing supporting your work. Happy computing, and on to our 4th reset! 🎉
